How Can It Help When Talking Therapy Isn’t Enough?
Sometimes, words aren’t enough. While talking can bring clarity and insight, you might feel like something is still holding you back. That’s because the roots of emotional pain, trauma, and stress often go deeper than the mind—they live in the body. This is where somatic therapy comes in, offering a powerful way to access healing beyond words.
What is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy focuses on the connection between your body, emotions, and thoughts. It works with the understanding that your body holds onto experiences—both joyful and painful—and these can manifest as tension, pain, addiction, or emotional blocks.
One approach I am specialising in is Hakomi, a gentle, mindfulness-centred method that helps you tune into your body’s wisdom. Hakomi invites you to explore sensations, emotions, and memories that may be driving unconscious patterns. It’s a deeply compassionate and non-invasive way to access healing that words alone might not touch.
How Does Somatic Therapy Work?
In somatic therapy, you’ll learn to listen to your body in a way you might not have before. Together, we explore:
- Your body’s sensations and messages, like tightness, warmth, or energy shifts.
- Mindful awareness, helping you stay present with what arises.
- Attuning to what these sensations are here to tell you - their innate intelligence
- Releasing tension or trauma, allowing emotions and experiences to flow and resolve naturally.
- Integration, where your body and mind align to create a greater sense of balance and ease.
It’s not about forcing change but allowing your body to guide the healing process.
Why Somatic Therapy Might Be Right for You
If you’ve ever felt stuck in traditional talk therapy, it’s not because you’re doing something wrong. The truth is, some experiences live so deeply in your body that words can’t always reach them.
Somatic therapy helps when:
- You feel emotionally or physically stuck, even after working hard in talk therapy.
- Stress or trauma feels overwhelming or gets “stuck” in your body.
- You want a more holistic approach to healing that connects your mind and body.
- You’re seeking lasting relief and a deeper sense of calm.
My Journey to Somatic Therapy
As a mindfulness coach and counsellor, I chose to specialise in somatic therapy because I saw a growing need among my clients. They often wanted to go deeper than words to address the patterns and emotions that felt trapped in their bodies. By incorporating somatic approaches like Hakomi into my practice, I’ve been able to support clients in profound and transformative ways.
This approach has taught me that healing isn’t just about thinking differently—it’s about feeling differently in your body, too.
